Plot:
The Britain-educated Shakti (Kamal Haasan), son of a village chieftain Periya-thevar (Sivaji Ganesan) returns home to his village after a long stay abroad. Accompanying Shakti is his girlfriend (Gouthami), with whom he intends to settle in a city and start a restaurant business. However, his father hopes he will don the patriarchal mantle, a role that the highly educated Shakti finds alien to him and distasteful primarily because of the bloody feud between factions aligned with his father and his paternal uncle, Chinna Thevar & his son, Maya Thevan. Violent confrontations between both sides leading to loss of lives and a humiliating Panchayat trial that leads to his father's death, forces Shakti to re-examine his initial judgment and adopt the patriarchal mantle that he initially despised.
